Basic operations of wood sanders

  • Preliminary (rough) processing. This is the cleaning of the surface from the old paintwork or rust, removing 1 – 2 mm from the non-planed bar, the processing of cut lines, etc. It is carried out using tape machines. Models with different tape sizes are designed for different types of processing. For example, a device with a tape width of 13 mm and a length of 457 mm can sand hard-to-reach places between two walls. A model with a belt width of 110 mm and a length of 620 mm is suitable for sanding surfaces from 2 to 3 square meters. m. Private artisans and furniture manufacturers use them. For example, they regularly sand parts of complex configuration, such as patterns on decorated chairs, or remove burrs and chips from freshly cut work-pieces. Cope with rough handling brush sanders, as their nozzle is a brush with steel bristles. Professional tools are equipped with two handles for a more comfortable hold of the device.
  • Finishing It is performed using a vibrating sander on wood. It provides sanding and polishing of the highest quality due to the circular movements of the sanding nozzle with a small amplitude of vibrations of the body. For coarser processing, an amplitude of 4 – 5 mm is recommended, and for delicate – 1.5 – 3 mm. It can be used by home craftsmen in large woodworking industries, for example, for polishing countertops, chairs, etc. For this work, eccentric (orbital) electric sanders for wood are also suitable. The part is treated with a sanding disk with nozzles of varying degrees of graininess. Their main feature is that the nozzle moves simultaneously in two planes, i.e. it rotates and at the same time moves back and forth.

Wood Sander Selection Options

  • Power – the higher, the better the quality and longer the work. The 125 W model is suitable for the amateur: remove old paint, varnish or stubborn dirt from the workpiece. Professionals will appreciate the power of 1.2 kW. The model is equipped with a gearbox with high torque, which guarantees intensive and high-quality sanding.
  • Speed of rotation – determines the intensity of surface treatment and depends on the purpose. For example, roughing to remove old coatings must be performed at low speeds from 500 to 1500 pm. The same applies to polishing a workpiece with a varnish coating: at speeds of more than 1000 – 1500 rpm, the varnish can begin to melt. But for finishing polishing to a mirror shine, for example, countertops, you will need the highest values - 10,000 – 12,000 rpm.
