What is the purpose of an electrical box?

An electric panel or box is a special device that serves to receive and redistribute electricity and protect lines of group circuits from overloads and short circuits. Externally, the electrical panel is a protected metal or plastic plate to which electricity meters, circuit breakers and an input circuit breaker are attached. In addition, the mini-box may include connectors with non-power electrical networks. Boxes and electrical panels are used in buildings for various purposes and metal structures, subject to high electrical safety requirements.

Types Of Electrical Boxes

Depending on various parameters, many types of electrical panels are distinguished, but the main one is the separation according to the type of installation:
  • The built-in electric switchboard is mounted in a niche in the wall specially prepared for these purposes.
  • The electric hinged shield is installed on the wall with the help of nails-dowels or self-tapping screws.
  • Electric floorboard – a device that is placed near one of the walls in the room.
  • An electric street switchboard is located on the outside of the building’s facade.

For such products, either plastic cases (the material for which is characterized by increased heat resistance) or a metal case made of sheet metal can be used. Also, some electrical panels and boxes are made of metal-plastic – as a rule, the walls of such a cabinet are made of metal, and the front door is made of thick plastic.
